The establishment of GPRID in the early 70's designated the organization as a chapter of the National RID, Inc. (est. 1964). The areas faithful deaf and hearing community involved in the GPRID advisory board and the GPRID membership nurtured the strength of the organization in the Pittsburgh region. Initial efforts of the organization were devoted to identifying individuals in the community who had sign language skills to develop a needs assessment study. The late inclusion of a Deaf Awareness Committee within the Chapter became another force in the community to promote networking among organizations and enhance deaf awareness programs. These efforts introduced technical assistive devices and sign language to a somewhat uninformed general public.
GPRID's cooperation with other organizations and educational centers resulted in the need for training for interpreters and potential interpreters. Programs were sponsored locally by Gallaudet University, the New York University National Interpreters Training Consortium (NITC) presenters and educators from the membership of RID, Inc.
As the memberships of the National RID increased across the country, state chapters were developed such as PARID. GPRID became a local chapter of PARID. GPRID-Pittsburgh has continually evolved through the tireless and dedicated efforts of its committed officers and membership.
